Also referred to as Seolsan and Seolbongsan, the mountain was named Mt. Seorak (‘Seol’ meaning ‘snow’ and ‘Ak’ meaning ‘big mountain’) because snow would not melt for a long time keeping the rocks in a permanent state of white. In November 1965, the Seorak Mountain district was designated as a Natural Monument preservation area. It was designated as a Biosphere Preservation District by UNESCO in August 1982.

There is a great bronze statue called Bronze Jwabul Statue at Shinhuengsa temple, which is well over 10 meters high.

Nami Island is a half-moon-shaped (462, 809㎡) isle, and on it is the grave of General Nami, who led a great victory against the rebels in the 13th year of the 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo (reign 1455 ~ 1468). The Island is 63km from Seoul in the direction of Chuncheon, and it is famous for its beautiful, tree-lined roads.
