K-Pop and K-Wave
The Korean Wave (Hangul: 한류; hanja: 韓流; RR: Hallyu; MR: Hallyu)—literally meaning ‘flow of Korea’—is a neologism referring to the increase in global popularity of South Korean culture since the 1990s. First driven by the spread of K-pop and K-dramas across East, South and Southeast Asia during its initial stages, the Korean Wave evolved from a regional development into a global phenomenon, carried by the Internet and social media and the proliferation of K-pop music videos on YouTube.
Since the turn of the 21st century, South Korea has emerged as a major exporter of popular culture and tourism, aspects which have become a significant part of its burgeoning economy. The growing popularity of Korean pop culture in many parts of the world has prompted the South Korean government to support its creative industries through subsidies and funding for start-ups, as a form of soft power and in its aim of becoming one of the world’s leading exporters of culture, a niche that the United States has dominated for nearly a century.
Major Korean broadcaster MBC opens the first hallyu theme park of the nation. The park is completed with hologram K-pop concerts, virtual reality drama sets and more. The theme park’s main attractions include experience zones where visitors can also experience being on stage with K-pop stars in holographic form and learn dance moves from them or become an main character in their favorite K-dramas.
On the second floor of Gangnam Tourism Information Office (K-Wave experience hall), you can release your K-Pop and K-Culture addiction through state-of-the-art displays and installations that will allow you to experience the Korean Wave (K-Wave or Hallyu). Sets from popular Korean TV series and movies have been reproduced, and countless items and accessories that have been used by Korean stars will be available for visitors in their own photo shoot! There is also a K-Star “Beauty Zone”, where visitors can get beauty tips from Korean stars. You can purchase souvenirs, K-Wave CDs, and MD goods from the gift shop. – See more at: http://tour.gangnam.go.kr/k-wave-experience-zone/#hallyu1
The K Star ROAD is the first project of the K ROADs, listing Hallyu stars’ favorite hangout spots and their management agencies located in Cheongdam-dong, Sinsa-dong and Nonhyeon-dong. Walking along the K Star ROAD will be an interesting and invaluable experience of Gangnam tour.
The first and a one-of-a-kind entertainment space, SMTOWN@coexartium. The greatest experience you will ever have, offered only by Asia’s No.1 S.M. Entertainment located in COEX Mall, Gangnam.
